Have you ever visited somewhere new and had the feeling
you’ve been there before; you’ve confidently found your
way around small ancient side-streets, or country lanes
and knew that there was something fantastic just down
there …..? Yes me too. Have you considered that you may
have been there before - in a past life.
There are lots of theories about whether we live just
the one life or have lived before and many people have
strong beliefs which will not be swayed in either
direction. I shall discuss three theories so that you
can make up your own mind, if you’ve not already done
so.
Inherited memories – (my personal favourite)
It has been proven that DNA has been passed down through
your genes from generation to generation, your eye
colour, hair colour pre-disposition to suffer from
various ailments, such as arthritis, asthma, heart
disease, diabetes etc, so why shouldn’t memories also be
inherited? Given that where memories of past lives have
been recorded most of the memories have been during the
early life of a subject and are not always as dramatic,
or exciting as expected for example whilst training one
of my peers was regressed and part of the chosen session
wording included the words ‘and the mists will clear’
she became quite distressed when looking down and
recalling what she was wearing she was dressed in furs,
nothing on her feet in a cold and misty wood what was
happening? She was hiding because she was being chased.
Not quite the desired memory of being rich and famous!
Alternative arguments
Under hypnosis the subconscious mind is susceptible to
suggestion and where the client is undertaking a past
life regression, therefore they really want to believe
that they have lived before therefore their recall could
be argued to simply be the wish to comply so in the act
of being regressed, they may recall either a false
memory, or the memory of a story or a film. Further more
when being historically analysed questioned for dates,
names etc many of the ‘memories’ of past lives have not
been historically correct. However, as we have seen from
personal accounts of the wars- the history books are
often embellished with political propaganda, so is
history correctly recorded, or an idealised work of
fiction?
However, this does not account for people such as Eric,
who sought therapy due to an irrational fear of flying
and on being asked (under hypnosis) to go back to the
first time he suffered from the fear and he went back to
being a pilot of a plane that was shot down in World War
II. The act of recalling an original trauma often
explains a reaction resulting in the disappearance of
the phobia, on the other hand people may need some help
to come to terms with it – particularly if their
religious, or personal beliefs have been challenged.
Another explanation is that memories can be inherited
through the cells or the organ that has been replaced;
because, the recipients have been prevented from
contacting the donor families, there are many cases such
as the eight year old who had received a donor heart
from a ten year old. Following the transplant the child
suffered recurring nightmares, of being murdered. When
the parents informed the medical staff they discovered
that the donor child had indeed been killed and
furthermore sufficient evidence was obtained from the
recipient child to gain a conviction and prosecute the
murderer. Many subjects who have undertaken surgery that
has necessitated the transplant of an organ and they
have begun to behave in ways that are odd to them, but
have a striking similarity to the previous donor.
Although there have been many studies, following
transplant surgery it is most commonly found that
recipients feel that they have changed although not all
of them could put their finger on how.
Another nice theory is that of ‘soul memory’ it has been
said that every life is a journey with a set of lessons
that need to be learned to balance the spirit – so if a
person has been powerful and cruel, in one life they may
need to learn temperance and humility. So a dictator in
the next life could be a victim. in another this could
explain why some people’s lives take the course that
they do.
It does have to be said that there are some entertaining
case histories to support the theory of past lives. Why
not contact me for further details?
